Correct use of hire and rent

Which is correct?

I will rent a video tape from the shop tonight? or

I will hire a video Tape from the shop tonight.

Is there a difference between the use of rent and hire as a verb?

Does it mean I can rent, I can interchange with hire?

In the US, only "rent" works there. In the US, you hire people to work for you. You rent rooms, equipment, tools, etc.
