Correct use of apostrophy

is it correct to say "girls' hostel" or "girl's hostel"

Top answer

Girl's hostel, girls' hostel and girls hostel are all possible choices. I suggest the one without the troublesome apostrophe.

My suggestion differs from that of MrM.

It's a girl's hostel. (A girl owns or runs the hostel.)
It's a girls' hostel. (The hostel is meant for girls only. Another theoretically possible meaning is that several girls own the hostel.)
It's a girls hostel. (Incorrect.)
