Grammar

Correct usage bracketing commas/non-essential information.

Reed's issues with drink were well publicised, from appearances on chat shows to a high-profile friendship with drinking partner, The Who drummer Keith Moon, with the two meeting while working on Tommy.

Is this sentence correct ? You cannot remove the information surrounded with commas without breaking the sentence structure.

(with drinking partner, with the two meeting)

And on this sentence why is the name of the drummer not non-essential and thus have commas either side.

Reed became a close friend and drinking partner of The Who's drummer Keith Moon in 1974 while working together on the film version of Tommy.

Top answer

The commas say that Moon was his only drinking partner, which seems unlikely, and you would need " his drinking partner". No commas. Also, even if you think "The" is an essential part of the band's name requiring a capital letter (and it is not), you would drop it in cases like this.

  • No commas.
