Correct usage.

You are already on the guest list, unless specifically requested to do so, there is no need for you to provide proof of identification.

He came off the horse and broke his back, consequently, he died of his injuries.

Is using the conjunctive adverb to start a sentence, instead of joining one, at the writers discretion or is there a correct usage.
