Correct time format used in US?

Example
7.00 p.m. - 10.00 p.m.
7.00 pm - 10.00 pm

All are in use: a.m., am, A.M. and AM. I would leave a space between number and unit, but you will see all permutations: no one seems to care much, so long as it is legible.
