My Family Photograph
Photographs have a special value in people’s lives. People have photographs that will remind them in the future how things were in the past, or sometimes they want to share experiences, wonderful times, special celebrations, and meaningful holidays as well. Robert Root, author of Captioning and Capturing the Past, describes photographs as “open windows into the past ”(pp 1-2). While looking over two albums worth of photographs, I found one that was taken four years ago in Peru.
The color photograph captures a happy family celebrating a special event. There are five people in the photograph. They are my mother, my sister, two uncles and I. They are all line up amazingly straight looking at the camera. Standing in the center of the photograph, I resemble a bamboo stalk because of my tall complexion. My two uncles are relatively height to each other. They dramatically change the photo when they switch places. My mother is standing on the right actually further away from the camera than my sister on the left. However, they are perceived to be the same distance away. Everybody is smiling so perfect they almost look draw on. Those smiles were produced through the significance of the event. They are all wearing elegant and glamorous clothes. It is interesting in the way light falls on the different surfaces of their faces and bodies and the various colors of their skins and clothes.
The background of the photograph was selected for its depth and the fact that the walls formed a solid background behind the figures. There are many pink and white balloons. The decoration shows it is beautiful and distinct party. A huge four-layer birthday cake with fifteen pink candles around it adorned the square table. It is cover with a white tablecloth. On the wall behind my family is a white board. It is decorated with two elaborated designs of pink swans on both sides and a pink heart in the middle that signs “Mis 15 años.”
In this photo, I was celebrating my quinceañera. A quinceañera is a celebration for young ladies who become fifteen years old and are from a Hispanic background. It is similar to a sweet sixteen party, only it celebrates becoming 15, not 16.This celebration is a girl’s transition becoming a woman in the society. Words cannot describe the way it made me feel this very special day. My family planned for months and spent too much money, but I loved it. My quinceañera made feel so grown up. One day I was just 14-year-old girl planning my birthday party, and the next day I was an adult.
This photograph reflects one of the most special days of my life. When I see the photo today, it brings mixed memories. This photo makes me feel happy because I enjoyed my quinceañera with all my family. It also makes me feel sad when I see it, four years later, because I am far away from my family now. However, I will meet them in someone else’s quinceañera next year.
