correct the sentence

please help me find out the mistake in this sentence,I can't see any mistake here:

1. Having lost his job (A), Edward was only (B) able to finish (C) one semester of college before he was forced (D) to leave shool

which one is the mistake?

Or "was barely able..." I do agree that "only" is the mistake. Or "just able"?

I totally agree with Philip. The use of "had been" is not ungrammatical, but it sounds redundant. If you say "Event A before Event B", this "before" makes clear the time relation between two Events A and B even
