Correct tense usage and meaning
I watched an online program called “Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?”on the TV yesterday. In that show, the contestant is asked number of questions, he will at least get that amount of money after answering that question rightly. The contestant can quit the game if he is not confident about the answer of a question. If he does so, he will get the amount of money he won. Finally, he has to give the correct answer even though he has quit the game. The show is presented in Marathi language. The scenario is contestant has quit the game, and he has got the amount of money he won, and he just needs to answer that question in order to let the audience know its answer. How can host ask him that question?
If you had to answer this question, which answer (option) would you have given? (He would have given the answer if___?)
I wonder what needs to be there after “If”. Similar example of this kind is,
Suppose, my friend has come late to office and I am now talking to him,
If you had come by bus, you would have had to stand on the bus.
Is the above sentence grammatically correct?
