Correct tense: [had rained] or [has rained]

I have made up the sentences below.

(1) Over the last two days, it had rained a lot. However, it was sunny this morning. I am surprised that it is snowing tonight.

(2) Over the last two days, it has rained a lot. However, it was sunny this morning. I am surprised that it is snowing tonight.

Some of my non-native English speaking friends think the past perfect (had rained) is correct based on the order of the events.
My other friends think the present perfect is correct because it sounds better with the phrase, Over the last two days.

Which tense is correct? Thank you.
