Correct tense: [clean the gym] or [are cleaning the gym]

(1) Today is the third day we clean the gym.

(2) Today is the third day we are cleaning the gym.

Most of my non-native English speaking friends think either one is correct. My other friends except one think (2) is correct. That particular friend of mine thinks neither is correct.

What is the correct tense of "clean"? Please help me. Thank you very much.

I'd use the present perfect.

[This/Today] is the third day [we've / we have] cleaned the gym.

You would say this after cleaning the gym today. I don't know if that's the exact meaning you want. Also, this is about three separate clean-up operations where you cleaned the whole gym each
