Correct Tense...
Hello!!
Wanted to check with Native speakers which one of the following would be correct:
a. Jesse Owens is believed to be the most gifted athlete the world has ever seen.
b. Jesse Owens is believed to have been the most gifted athlete the world has ever seen.
I believe a. is correct, since the statement's thrust is on 'belief' (and the belief that Jesse is the most gifted athlete, is 'still' there). However, my colleague opines that since Jesse died in 1980, the correct answer should be b.
Kindly advice.
