Correct sentense?

Hi there,

Which one of the below is grammatically correct?

The Great Auk had to contend with hungry polar bears and foxes, which might keep their numbers extremely low.

The Great Auk had to contend with hungry polar bears and foxes, which could have kept their numbers extremely low.

I think the first one is correct. Might (possibility) But what makes "could have kept" wrong in this context? I'm not so sure.
