Correct sentence?

anonymousHow do I know whether a would used in sentence is conditional or non-conditional? I won’t know this just reading books.

You don't have to have a definite classification to understand and use would. Millions of native speakers have no idea what conditional would and non-conditional would even mean. That's just terminology that's overlaid on the language. It's meant to help you get started. It's not meant to be used like crutches when you break a leg. Eventually you have to throw away the crutches. That means not trying to classify everything every time you see it.

Hi, CJ. First of all, I am very thankful for your time and help with my English. I think I am finally understanding how to know if would is conditional or non-conditional especially when would is used for uncertainty. Please check this piece of article by The Guardian and I will let you know the difference.

Rupert Murdoch's bold attempt to create one of the world's largest TV production businesses is the latest offensive in an increasingly frenetic battle of the media giants to control the hearts, and pockets, of viewers. Murdoch's Shine Group, maker of shows including MasterChef, will become part of a $2bn-plus joint venture that includes equity group Apollo Global's Endemol and American Idol maker Core Media. Endemol, responsible for hits including Big Brother and Deal Or No Deal, is by far the largest of the three with revenues just over £1bn. Shine makes about £510m. This would indicate Fox will have to make a significant investment to take a 50% stake. However according to one person familiar with the talks, which have been going on for well over a year, this is not the case due to the huge debt pile Apollo is carrying into the deal

Please look at the bold would in the sentence. I think it’s a non-conditional would to show uncertainty. I don’t think it’s a conditional would at all. It’s just a variant of “This indicates Fox will have …”.

Am I correct? If this is non-conditional would, then I can assure you that I now get it. I will explain you my understanding once you reply. And my explanation will be a completely different one. Please check if the “would” in the article above is non-conditional used for uncertainty.
