In the US. In the UK, the word "restroom" is not used. The word is toilet.

When I was at school in the UK, it was common for students to ask teachers "Can I go to the toilets?". Another common thing to do was just say "I need to go to the toilets". Toilets plural because there would be many more than one, in schools.
