Correct sentence?

Can I use the word 'translation'? Did I make other mistakes?
P.S. In the previous paragraph I defined the definition.

"The following essential step is the translation of the definition into the selection of available data."

Top answer

" I have taken some liberty in interpreting what you meant to say. I think you mean to take a sample of the data and apply some formula or analysis (according to your "definition") in order to come to some result or conclusion.

Thanks, application sound better.

I want to explain that I'm going to select variables out of a large dataset, which are chosen because they fit some definition. Does this make sense?

Raw data, by definition, is not variable; it is fixed. However, you can try to fit a data set to a straight line, calculating the slope and the intercept of the best-fit line. The slope and intercept are the variables in this example.
