Correct sentence.

a) The cows crossed the stream and they followed the lead cow to the barn.
b) The cows crossed the stream as they followed the lead cow to the barn.
c) The cows crossed the stream they followed the lead cow to the barn.
d) The cows crossed the stream, they followed the lead cow to the barn.

sorta confused on this one.... which one is the correct one? or any advice for the right answer?
