1. Could you tell me why the word "it" is needed here, if it is needed indeed?

I think we can use the word "there" or not here.

How many people are (there) in the classroom?

2. How should we answer this question if we are still living there?

Q: How long have been in XXX?

A: I have been (have been living) in XXX (here) for about X years.
