Correct punctuation: My question to you is....

Hi

Could you please tell me which of the following sentences is correctly punctuated?

My question to you is, where were you on the night of the murder?
My question to you is: where were you on the night of the murder?
My question to you is, "Where were you on the night of the murder?"

Any other suggestions?

Thanks,

Tom

This one. The others look wrong to me

Personally, I wouldn’t use a comma.

Repunctuation would help all three:

My question to you—where were you on the night of the murder?
My question to you: where were you on the night of the murder?
My question to you is "Where were you on the night of the murder?"

I certainly don't object to this as I consider myself a linguistic liberal

Cool Breezein some languages using quotation marks when no one's words are quoted would definitely be somewhat odd. It's okay in English?
Well, I've never questioned it. Quotes are quotes.

The Chicago has it this way, and it looks right to me, besides. The colon is not called for, and quotation marks are for speech.

I'd go for #3.
