Grammar

correct preposition/s

1. The 2nd edition of Times-Chambers Essential English Dictionary says 'weak on grammar'. However, the 1st edition says 'weak at grammar'. Now I'm confused because another dictionary says it should be 'weak in'.

2. Now I also wonder whether it should be 'strong in,' 'strong at' or 'strong on' something.

According to the above dictionary, it is 'strong on', but another dictionary says it should be 'strong in'.

It would appear that any of the three prepositions can be used.

There are no fixed rules on the use of preposition. It all depends on the context.

eg. He is strong in math.

The Essential English Dictionary has the following example sentence:

I was strong on physiology.

So it would appear either 'in' or 'on' is the correct preposition when used with 'strong'.

Hi Marius

I've no problem with 'competent' but with 'weak' and 'strong'.

I'd choose "in" here too.

Yet maybe different adjectives require different prepositions...

"good at ": 82.000 (Google)

"good on": 788

"good in": 763

Hi Yoong,
Longman Dictionary of Contemporary English says:
New Zeland was weak in defence.
She speaks fluently but she's weak on grammar.

Oxford advanced Learner's Dict. says:
I was always weak in the science subjects.

But I also checked on the net, and it seems to me that "strong" and "weak" are used the same way as "g
