Correct or not no. 74: a birthday?

Dear All,

I've just seen this sentence:

He has a birthday today.

Shouldn't it be: He has birthday today. ?

If not, then what about:

It's my birthday today.

Does the adjective (or posessive pronoun) my replace the preposition?

Thank you
