Correct or not no. 67: would have been VS was

Dear All,

Would you please be so kind and tell me which of these two is correct?

I think that if my husband was Italian...

I think that if my husband would have been Italian...

I'd say it's the first one but today I heard a sentence from a person who speaks very good English and she used the second one.

Thanks

The first one is OK. More formally, "was" would be "were". I cannot think of any situation in which the second one would be correct.

  • The first one is OK.

  • I cannot think of any situation in which the second one would be correct.
  • It sounds like an incorrect attempt at "if my husband had been Italian".
