Correct or not no. 47: impede my opening (in chess)

Hello there,

Is it alright to use the word impede in the following sentence?

(talking about chess)

A: You should learn some openings.

B: The thing about openings is that whenever I learn an opening and then I try to implement it, you always make a move that impedes my opening.

What I want to express is that whenever me an my friend play chess he always makes a move that ruins my carefully crafted opening. An opening is based on a certain pattern and if your opponent makes a move that violates the pattern, your opening is over.

Thanks

Thanks MM. One follow-up question. Is it correct to say violate a pattern ?

I think only if it is you who are following the pattern incorrectly. If it is your opponent, then he thwarts or disrupts (and probably some other terms as well) your pattern.
