Correct or not: contacts for reference?

Dear Users,

Is the following question correct? If I want to ask a person if he/she would be willing to provide references for me when asked by a new employer?

May I ask you to be on my list of contacts for reference?

Thanks

Perfect Stranger Is the following question correct? It is OK. I myself would be a little more tentative: Would you be willing to be on my list of references?
