Correct or not?

Is the sentence in the coloured square correct? I mean the following sentence: She said to me that she had got no money.

I studied that 'said to + object' is used in direct speech only.

  • Grammatically, yes, but it's very awkward on the ear.
  • Instead of 'said to me that', we normally say either just 'said that' or, if we want to mention the person we spoke to, 'told me that'.
  • Also, 'have got' (present) is very common, but 'had got' (its past) is not at all common in comparison.
