Correct or not?

Hi,

I wonder if the sentence below is grammatically correct or not? Some of my friends think that this sentence is not meaningful and usage of the whereas is wrong in this context. I need a native help here. Thanks.

Some birds, such as nightingales, sing beautifully, whereas parrots can learn to speak short sentences.

Top answer

Anonymous whereas is wrong in this context Correct. There is no opposite idea that contrasts with the first. 'whereas' would work better like this: Some birds sing beautifully, whereas others only screech or squawk.
