At the detailed design stage, I worked together with main contractor, supplier and sub-contractors to design the installation details of AHU associated with Indoor Air Quality (IAQ) equipment and pipework routing in the limited space of plant room.

As the Air Handling Unit (AHU) rooms were designed inside the office, I discussed with clientÂ’s representative at the early stage regarding my experience of break-out noise emanated from air conditioning equipment. Apart from the silencers were designed for the AHU. I proposed to install lead duct lag around the supply air duct, fan supply section of AHU, the space between AHU and roomÂ’s wall. In addition, I also proposed to enhance the return air louver in free area for AHU, thereby mitigating the noise impact to the office. Eventually, client totally accepted my recommendations.

Furthermore, I carried out an appraisal of the cooling tower plant incorporating all relevant building drawings. The design of the condensing pipework ran through at the high-level of corridor between two plant rooms. The level of condensing pipe was confirmed higher than the basin of cooling towers. I identified swiftly the water loss and overflow from cooling tower when switching off the cooling tower system.

For the cooling tower system design, I come up with two options and presented to the client with the aim of preventing water loss from the system. Maintaining 24-hour operations of the cooling tower system was the first option to avoid triggering the overflow alarm. Another option was to install a pair of isolating valves in the condensing pipe and control system incorporated into the cooling tower operation to avoid the water loss.
