which one of the below is a correct sentence and why?
Q.    I was very  surprised at hearing the News.

Or

Q.   I was much surprises at hearing the News.

I was much surprised at hearing the news. Also, I was much surprised upon hearing the news.


Both are fine. Your second one is higher register.

It's also common to use the infinitive instead of the gerund:
I was very/much surprised to hear the news.
