- He said that at the time the murder had been committed, he had been travelling on the 8 o'clock train to London.

Direct speech (The inspector speaks to the man)
- The inspector said,"Do you always catch such an early train?"
Indirect speech
- The inspector asked him whether he always caught such an early train.

Direct speech (The man speaks to the inspector)
- He said,"Of course I do, I must be at work at ten o'clock. My employer will confirm that I
was there on time."
Indirect speech
- He answered that of course he did, he had to be at work at ten o'clock. His employer would conform that he had been there on time.

- The inspector said,"Would a later train get you to work on time?"
- The man said,"I suppose it would, but I never catch a later train."

- The inspector asked him whether a later train would get him to work on time.
- The man supposed that a later train would get him to work on time but he never caught a later train.
