Correct my essay

Dear English teachers,

I'd like you to correct my essay. I hope that's allowed by the rules of this forum.
Please do not punish me on the content, only on the grammar, structure and vocobulary.

Every year about a fifth of all pregnancies end in induced abortion. In our own country abortion is widely accepted, in other western countries abortion is still a big issue. For most of us, this sounds quite strange, but there are some good arguments against abortion. Abortion is an act of violence against an individual, because a fetus is a human being and there should be only one exception to allow abortus.

Most people in our society believe in civil liberties, from this point of view we should not allow abortion. If you consider the fetus as an individual who has the same rights as you and I, abortion could be considered as an act of violence. Abortion is as removing all the oxygen around someone, it nullifies him to such an extent, that eventually his death results.

Nevertheless, one might argue that a fetus in an early stage of development does not count as a person or self-owner. This is hard to maintain with any confidence, given the lack of a clear dividing line in fetal development between non-person/person status. Moreover, those in comas and vegetative states, who are as little capable of mentation as a primitive fetus is, do not lose their right to life for that. The often-made claim that a fetus is only ‘potentially’ a human being is simply false, it is a human being, it is just a who person who hasn’t yet fulfilled his potentials. A fetus in an early stage of development isn’t owned by a women, it is a human being with its own genetic code who is only depending on the women.

However, there is one exception, and it is not in the case of pregnancy resulting from rape. Adam could not justify letting Eva drown by saying ‘I never consented to Eva’ coming ashore, and it’s not my fault she happened to get shipwrecked near my island!’. The one and only exception is in the case of emergency , that means abortion is allowed if the mother is going to die if her pregnancy is not ended. You could call this self-defence, because the fetus now clearly is a threat to the mother. It is a choice of whether the mother and the child are going to die or just the child is going to die, it is a pretty easy and logically choice.

To conclude, abortion should be banned because it is an act of violence. A fetus does clearly count as a person, because it is a human being with its own genetic code, it just hasn’t yet fulfilled his potentials. There is only one exception to allow abortion. It is not in the case of pregnancy resulting from rape, but in the case of emergency.

Sincerely,

A student from the Netherlands
