Correct my cover letter, please!

Hi,

I wanna apply for a PhD scholarship which require acceptance letter from a professor. This cover letter is for the professor whom I wish to work under her supervision. So you can see that there's actually no exact position. Please give me your comments and help me revise it! Thank you very much!

Dear Professor XXX,

I am writing to you in order to apply for a PhD position under your supervision regarding Designing of Environmental Policy Instruments.

In 2011, I completed the Masters of Environmental Management course co-operated by XXX Vietnam and XXX, Germany. My background and interest in Science date back from the time when I was in the Gifted class for Chemistry, XXX. After that, I continued to study Chemistry at the same university. During my undergraduate years, I developed my concern in sustainable development, particularly waste management in urbanizing areas in Vietnam. Therefore, I have enrolled in a joint master course which is mentioned above for further study.

Municipal solid waste management has become an urgent topic in Vietnam especially in Hanoi which is one of the most rapidly developing cities in Asia. As for my understanding, technology alone cannot solve the problem. In reading through your publications, I became fascinated with your research in environmental policy instruments specifically PES. I have strong curiosity in the possibility of PES application in waste management since landfill can be considered as an environmental service where the providers are people living near the landfill and suffering from its impacts. However, I am happy with any other topics related to “environmental policy tools for developing country” which you can kindly suggest me. I would like to pursue my interest with doctoral studies which I hope I can work under your guidance and contribute to both PEPE as well as my country.

During my master course, I was always one of the top students. I was a recipient of XXX scholarship for a four-month exchange programme in XXX, Germany in 2010. Again in 2011, I was chosen to participate in XXX Training Program sponsored by XXX at XXX, Japan. These opportunities give me experiences in working independently as well as in a team of people with diverse backgrounds and nationalities. Beside solid experience in environmental technology and background in environmental economy and policy, I have equipped myself with the knowledge in statistic and data analysis software.

In addition to my academic activities, I also take part in many social activities. I was the president of Student Association in my Faculty, and was the leader of a volunteer team for two years. I have good communication, teamwork, leadership and organization skills.

As for financial support, I intend to apply for XXX Scholarship in November 2012. On other hand, I would be grateful if you could give me any information of other resources in your most favourable consideration.

With my working experience and eagerness for learning, I believe I can be the candidate for a prestigious PhD position in your group. I will bring with me the enthusiasm and passion into this job to overcome any obstacles and difficulties waiting ahead.
