Correct it please...

Dear teachers,

1. Paul ____ a friendship with a girl who was staying in the same hotel as us in France last year.
A. picked up B. caught up C. struck up D, took up.

2. The findings of the survey ____ contrary to what was expected.
A.went B. made C. turned D. ran.

For the second one the answer is turned.

1. I agree with "struck up".

2. There is no special context, and based on meaning there is no clearly best answer. The best neutral answer would be 'were'.
"made" is no good at all.
"turned" suggests that sometimes during the survey the results changed away from what was expected. So I don't like "tuurned".
"went" and "ran" are similar in meaning, but 'ran contrary' is
