Topic 6: If you could change one important thing about your hometown, what would you changes? Use reasons and specific examples to support your answer.
If you ask anyone what problem is the most terrible in Hanoi, the answer is always traffic congestion. So, if I could, more than anything, i want this problem solved in Hanoi city. Why? Firstly, traffic congestion makes us waste more money and causes more air pollution. It is fact that your car burns the most fuel while accelerating to get up to speed. The stopping and starting in traffic jams burns fuel at a higher rate than the smooth rate of travel on the highway, therefore, pumps more pollutants into the air. These pollutants create air pollution and are related closely to global warming. As a result, we have to waste more money on fuel to live in the polluted air. It’s estimated that in Hanoi, the sum of wasted money on fuel and wasted working time caused by traffic jams is about 36.4 billion VND/ day (12.812 billion VND/ year). So, solving the traffic jam helps us save money on fuel and limit the pollution of the air.
Secondly, people save a lot of time without traffic jam. This condition makes us difficult to estimate exactly travel time. You can arrive the office too late or too early on a beautiful day when the traffic isn’t unusually obstructed. This wasted time is taken away from leisure time and time to do other tasks throughout the day.
Finally, getting stuck in a traffic jam is a big cause of everyday stress. In Hanoi we get traffic jam all days in week, all weeks in month. Every morning, we rush hurriedly to office and get additional stress because of traffic jam that can make you late for work. At the end of the day, after a hard workday, we want to get home to relax but get additional stress again through congested roads. This is not good for our health, and affects severely the quality of our life.
So, Hanoi - the center of Vietnam's politics and culture with more than thousand years of history, now more than ever, needs to solve effectively the traffic problem to make it way for developing economy, limiting air pollution and improving the quality of people’s life.
