Correct grammar of a sentence ?

I am wondering if someone can help me determine if the following sentence is grammatically correct: "You will earn points based on your attendance at as well as active participation in this course."

While some may have stylistic concerns, I feel it is technically correct. I feel it could be improved with the simple placement of commas thusly: "You will earn points based on your attendance at, as well as active participation in, this course." - but that it is still correct even without the added commas. Any help would be appreciated!
