Correct grammar?

Had my father not died, I would not have had to deal with a lengthy bereavement process. Instead, I would have continued to successfully engage with my course, and been able to complete my first year - as was initially intended.

i have a habit of putting - where maybe there doesn't need to be one.

Is using the - incorrect in my sentence?

Anonymous i have a habit of putting - where maybe there doesn't need to be one. You need no punctuation mark at that point in the sentence. By the way, what does "engage with a course" mean?
