correct grammar

I wouldn't touch this with a 20-foot pole or "with a 20-feet" pole

I know that 20 feet is the length of the pole, which is 20 feet long, but the first sentence with the - has me flabbergasted as I have seen it written both ways many times, though more in the singular.
