You can tell the "I" is correct because you would remove the "John and"

I went to see a movie yesterday.

You may have meant to ask which is grammatically correct when it is the subject of a sentence. Just being at the beginning either "John and I" or "John and me" could be correct. "John and me" would be rare, however, initially as an object.

John and me they believed, but not Phil and his friends.

Note this is also correct: The only two left were John and I.
