Correct form of the word

The children laughed heartily at the .....(FUN) down in baggy trousers.

What is the correct form of the word "FUN" in that sentence? What is it?
Is it a noun?
I don't know why "down" presents here. So what does the word "down" here mean? It is an adv or an adj?
And if i erase "down", will the meaning of the sentence change?

It's written "down" in my exercise, not "clown"
More likely it's wrong

Someone wrote "clown" with the c and l too close together, and the person who typed the word thought the "cl" was a "d".
