Correct conjunction?

Hi teachers,

Aeschylus' three "Oresteian" plays tell a single story, ............ they are usually read one after the other, and not as individual plays in their own right.

A) so
B) but

Which conjuntion should I choose here to make a grammatically correct sentence?

I think both of them are OK, but the question of the writer says only option A is grammatically correct. What do you think? I need a native speaker help.
