Correct conjunction?

Hello

The Great Auk, which became totally extinct in the mid-19th century, was the first bird to be called penguin, ------- not directly to today's penguin.

while, though, despite

Which one should I choose for the blank above to write a grammatically correct sentence? While is OK to me. Am I wrong?
