Correct (clear?) comma uses?

Hi. I happen to think there might not be needs for commas below. Do you think there are needs for commas (as there are)? I could be wrong but some sentences in writing are fuzzy (perhaps both contextually and structually) and as to whether to use a comma or not and sometimes either - either with or without a comma - will do fine. What do you think?

Botanic gardens are much sought-after places, for visitors, families and flower lovers.

What role do they have in helping to inform broader community about practical methods to employ to create beautiful gardens, in their communities and around their homes.

Also, do you think this sentence with a comma is correct?

He thanked him, then said good-bye.

I think this would be correct.

He thanked him and then said good-bye.

In addition, I am sorry but could you also tell me if we could write the phrase "a good-bye" instead of "good-bye" above?
