Correct answer for this question?

Hi, it's confusing... When you are asked "Why are you late?", which answer is correct?


1) I am late because I missed the bus. OR

2) I was late because I missed the bus.

It is Tuesday evening. My husband comes in the door at 6:30. We have dinner every evening at 6.

Me: Why are you late?
Husband: I am late because I missed the bus.
Boss: Jake, why were you late for work yesterday morning? You missed our team meeting.
Jake: I was late because I missed the bus.

In everyday speech, we commonly avoid repetition and just say eg I missed the bus.
