Correct?

"His voice was almost harsh with the beat of his blood, his hunger, the rushing need he refused to give in to." Is this sentence correct and what does it mean?

If "need" refers to something else previously mentioned, three things made his voice almost harsh:

  • the beat of his blood (i.e. his heartbeat, presumably)
  • his hunger
  • the rushing need (that) he refused to give in to

Alternatively, it is possible that "need" refers to hunger, i.e. the need to eat.
