'...because I had waited for three hours for him.'

or

'...because I had been waiting for him for three hours.'

Why do we use the past perfect? I think using the past simple sounds more natural "I waited for him 3 hours" I think a native English speaker would use this. Being angry is a reason not an action that took place, so I think using the past simple here is simpler.
