Corporal punishment to children_IELTS task 2

I would be grateful if you guys could comment on this essay.

Thank you in advance!

Topic: Although it is generally prohibited, corporal punishment persists in many families. Do you think corporal punishment is an acceptable way to regulate children’s behaviour?

Essay:

Physical punishment is of concern for researchers, psychologists. Although some parents may believe that corporal punishment is a good method of teaching children, the issue as to whether it has exerted profoundly internal and external effects on children has sparked controversy. This essay will argue that its adverse impact on a child’s personality, identity, and behaviour is significant and should be taken into serious attention.

Firstly, it is important to recognise that corporal punishment increases the likelihood of causing remediless harm to children. The distinction between discipline and abuse is hardly clear-cut, and there is no assurance that parents can control their discipline properly. Spanks, for instance, are widely accepted by many parents as a method of discipline, unfortunately, most parents hit harder when children recommit the offence. Physical injuries seem to be an inevitable result in most cases.

Secondly, corporal punishment has been considered as the facilitator of many kinds of emotional harms. In fact, children who are exposed to intense and frequent physical punishment are more likely than their peers to suffer depression, unhappiness, anxiety, and feeling of homelessness. The accumulative effects of these problems have profound influence over most survivors of physical punishment. They lose the courage to venture and have no desire for being creative individuals, as they only try things that their parent permit them to do.

Based on the above-mentioned arguments, not only does corporal punishment cause physical harm but also impacts negatively on children’s emotion. It is imperative that every parent should control their intensity of physical punishment in order to avoid any negative behaviour problems.
