cornerstones

Should I say Formula 1 victories or victories in Formula 1 competitions?Have I used cornerstones correctly? Is the rest of the sentence ok?Thanks

Formula 1 victories/Victories in Formula 1 competitions made Japanese engines famous, but the speed, power and reliability, cornerstones on which Honda built its original image, have been supplemented by the sophisticated looks and a dose of exclusiveness.

I think probably 'Formula 1 victories' is fine, 'cornerstones' is fine, but I'd omit 'the' before 'sophisticated looks.'
