copy vs imitate

What is the difference btw 'copy' and 'imitate'?
Could you give me some examples?

Copy seems to be a little more useful in that it can be used for both animate and inanimate things. Imitate can be used for pretending to be a person or an animal. Sometimes they have much the same meaning, as when a group is requested to copy what the teacher has written on a blackboard.

They are imitating his actions (even if what they write is not in their own language.)
