Cope

"I lost my dad four years ago."

"How did you cope with it?"

"I went out a lot, partied, got drunk."

"Did it help?"

"For a time."

Hi is this conversation perfectly natural?

Can I ask "How did you cope with it?", and then afterwards "Did it help?" Or if it lies in the word "cope" that it must have helped?

In other words, does "cope" basically mean to get over something or what you did to try to get over something?

I really hope you understand what I mean.

  • I see your problem, but it is not a problem.
  • "Cope" does suggest that it did help, but not in casual conversation.
