MaverickKThe explanation which I read was - A coordinating conjunction should join 2 things which are similar. So the correct usage should be -
"The gifts of the father and those of the son were good".
Please keep in my mind that this is a question from a standard test. So I have to go by what the rule of grammar says(and not what the informal english says).
