COORDINATED ADJECTIVES (USAGE)

Hello Teachers,

Would you please explain the rules for coordinated adjectives? How and when an adjective becomes a coordinated adjective?

Top answer

In English, when plural adjectives of various classes are used, they are usually put in the order like below. (class 1) determiner : 'a/an', 'the', 'this', 'that', 'many', 'some', 'my' (class 2) subjective quality : 'beautiful', 'humble', 'perfect' (class 3) objective quality : (3-1) size ('large'), (3-2) shape ('rectangular'), (3-3) age ('old'), (3-4) color ('red'), (3-5) origin ('French'), (3-6) material ('wooden') (class 4) use specifier : 'locking' chair, 'book' cover. When two or three adjectives of the same class are used, they are called "coordinated adjectives".

Thanks for your explanation, Paco2004. You mentioned,"In English, when plural adjectives of various classes are used, they are usually put in the order like below. ". By 'plural adjectives', Do you mean multiple adjectives--more than one adjective?

Yes.. I was wrong in the word choice. It should be "multiple adjectives".
