Coordinate adjectives

During the miserable dark days in World War Two
I found it in a book, i think "miserable and dark" are coordinated because their posions can be reversed ,there , a coma or a "and" should be inserted between them. right? Thank you !

I found it in a book. I think "miserable and dark" are coordinated because their positions can be reversed , there. A comma or an "and" should be inserted between them. Right? Thank you !

It is fine as written. It is the author's option to use "and." I do not recommend a comma.
